(KYIV, UKRAINE) – The death toll from a Russian strike on Kyiv has risen to 21, with 85 people injured, including two children, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported on 2 July 2026.
Rescue workers are continuing to clear the rubble and search for survivors following the overnight attack by the Russian Federation. The State Emergency Service said information is being updated as the operation proceeds.
At the site of a destroyed multi storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district of the capital, Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko is coordinating rescue efforts. He reported that the total number of dead in Kyiv had earlier climbed to 13, with one death confirmed at that specific location.
Minister Klymenko said at least six people remain missing under the rubble at the residential building site. Rescue teams from the State Emergency Service have so far pulled seven people from the debris at this location, with 17 people saved in total at the site.
The Interior Minister explained that moments of silence are periodically declared during the search operation so that rescuers can listen for signs of life from anyone trapped beneath the rubble. Special equipment, including vibrophones capable of detecting a heartbeat, is being used in the effort.
The attack came from forces loyal to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, whose military has repeatedly targeted civilian areas in Ukraine. A day of mourning has been declared in Kyiv for the victims of the strike.
