(JUBA) – A two day conference has opened at the at the Juba Grand Hotel in Central Equatoria State to address disputes arising from the movement of cattle across farmland. The meeting brings together farmers, cattle keepers and local leaders who want to prevent seasonal grazing from turning into conflict.
The event is taking place under the theme Addressing Cattle Migration Challenges to Promote Peaceful Coexistence.
A statement from Terekeka County Press sad the talks aim to establish practical rules that can be accepted by both farming communities and herders whose animals must travel in search of pasture and water.
The Governor of Central Equatoria State, General Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, officially launched the conference. He said both sides depend on the land for survival and should avoid confrontations that damage crops or lead to revenge attacks.
Commissioners from five counties are attending except Morobo whose representative was not present at the start. Participants are expected to agree on safe routes for animal movement and discuss ways to compensate farmers if fields are affected.
Seasonal cattle migration is common across South Sudan but often leads to clashes when herds enter cultivated areas. Some farmers accuse herders of ignoring boundaries while herders say farmland has blocked old paths that animals used for generations.
Community leaders at the meeting said that clear communication and advance planning could reduce tension. They added that young people are usually the first to react when disputes arise and need guidance from elders and local authorities.
Attendees believe that if an agreement is reached in Central Equatoria, it could serve as a model for other states facing similar challenges. The conference will continue on Tuesday with group discussions and a possible signing of commitments.
