(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Authorities in Yei River County are urging residents to work closely with security agencies to curb a rising wave of nighttime insecurity in urban residential areas.
The appeal follows repeated complaints from residents of Yei about increasing armed attacks occurring at night.
Last week, Yusto Ludanga Yuasa, a medical officer at Yei Civil Hospital, was brutally attacked inside his room in the Hai Tarawa neighborhood. He sustained serious injuries to his lower jaw during the incident.
Police authorities confirmed that one suspect linked to the attack was arrested and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Speaking to the press at the county headquarters on Monday, County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme called on residents to remain vigilant and organize neighborhood security watch groups to help deter crime.
“Despite the fact that there is nighttime security patrol, I want to urge our citizens particularly here in Yei town, let us watch our backs. If anything happens to your neighbor at night, don’t lock your door and remain silent. Please raise an alarm as you wait for the patrol to reach you. If attackers deal with your neighbor, you might be the next target, so please cooperate and raise an alarm,” he said.
The commissioner emphasized that while security patrols are ongoing, community cooperation is critical in addressing the situation.
“Let us keep watching the situation and if you hear any abnormal movement within your area, wake up and alert your neighbor and communicate this information to security. Let us create a good network between citizens and security organs so that we address the situation together. The safety of the people is the responsibility of everybody.”
Commissioner Seme further urged the youth in Yei town to take an active role in safeguarding their communities and to collaborate closely with government security agencies to combat nighttime crime.
County authorities maintain that efforts are underway to strengthen security measures and restore safety across affected urban areas.
