(YEI COUNTY) – Local authorities in Yei River County have welcomed a new public prosecutor transferred from Torit in Eastern Equatoria State. Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme officially received the appointee on Friday, marking a step to strengthen the local justice system in Central Equatoria.
Speaking at the reception, Taban promised the county government’s full support and close cooperation with the judiciary. He stressed that dedication and resilience are key in the prosecutor’s role and that the justice system relies on the active presence of legal officers.
The new prosecutor, Joseph Ayik, replaces Thomas and previously worked in Khartoum before South Sudan’s independence. He later served in Western Bahr el Ghazal State. Ayik said he has now been transferred to Yei River County to handle pending and unresolved cases before the county court.
Ayik noted that judicial officers are required to serve across South Sudan as duties demand. He thanked county authorities and judicial staff for the warm reception in Yei.
Yei River County has operated without a public prosecutor for several years, causing delays in trials and long term detention of inmates. Local resident Aloro James described the appointment as a positive development that will help resolve long-standing cases and ensure fair trials.
The arrival of the new prosecutor was welcomed by county authorities, judiciary officials and community members, who expressed hope it would improve access to justice and restore public confidence in the legal system.
