MSF Reacts to Hospital Attack
(Morobo) – An armed attack on Morobo County Hospital in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State on the night of Friday, 20 June 2025, has drawn strong condemnation from international medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Armed men raided the hospital, stole medical supplies, robbed staff of personal belongings, and set two ambulances on fire. While there were no physical injuries reported among staff or patients, MSF described the incident as a serious threat to healthcare in one of the country’s most vulnerable regions.
Morobo County Hospital, a facility under the South Sudanese Ministry of Health, is supported by MSF as part of its broader efforts in Central Equatoria. The organisation provides support to the maternity ward through the supply of medical materials, training for local staff, bedside mentorship, and partial salary support. MSF confirmed that none of its staff were present at the hospital during the time of the attack.

The assault comes amid a broader deterioration in security across Yei and Morobo counties. In May 2025, MSF was forced to scale down its outreach medical services in Yei County due to growing insecurity, which disrupted access to healthcare for many people already facing limited options. The organisation says this latest incident further undermines its ability to deliver essential medical care to those most in need.
MSF labelled the attack a violation of international humanitarian law and called on all parties involved in South Sudan’s ongoing conflict to respect the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. Health workers, patients, and hospitals, the statement said, must never be targets in any armed confrontation.
