(YEI RIVER COUNTY)— Yei River County authorities have ordered the formation of an independent electoral committee to oversee the delayed Boda Boda association elections, a move aimed at restoring confidence after the earlier process collapsed.
The directive was issued by County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo during a meeting on Wednesday with leaders of the Yei Boda Boda Association, who briefed him on the status of the postponed elections.
The new committee will be tasked with guiding the electoral process, ensuring adherence to agreed procedures, and delivering a transparent and credible vote for the association’s next leadership.
The decision follows the cancellation of the initial elections, which failed to go ahead as planned due to a range of challenges, including disagreements among members over the electoral process, concerns about fairness, and lack of consensus on voter eligibility and candidate participation.
Officials acknowledged that the absence of a clearly independent body to manage the process contributed to mistrust among riders, ultimately forcing the postponement.
During the meeting, Commissioner Malimbo further instructed the County Department of Youth and Sports to organize a consultative forum bringing together all registered boda boda members to agree on a new electoral roadmap.
He stressed that inclusivity and equal opportunity for all candidates must be central to the rescheduled process.
Malimbo also indicated that the county may seek technical support from Boda Boda leadership structures in Juba to strengthen the management of the elections.
The County Director of Youth and Sports, identified as Clement, said preparations are underway to establish the independent electoral body and ensure a peaceful vote.
He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to facilitating dialogue among riders and supporting an orderly transition of leadership.
The boda boda sector plays a vital role in the local economy of Yei, providing transport services and employment to a large number of young people.
As such, the leadership elections are seen as crucial not only for the association’s governance but also for stability and coordination within one of the county’s most active informal sectors.
A new date for the elections is expected to be announced following consultations with stakeholders.
