Residents Welcome Near Completion of Gombura Statue in Lainya Town

The Gombura Statue is a cultural monument dedicated to Chief Gombura Lo’duun Ki, the founding father and ancestral leader of the Pojulu people. The statue depicts the chief carrying a heavy stone, symbolising the forced labour endured by his people during the colonial era in the construction of Yei District. The monument was temporarily removed to pave the way for the construction of the Agrey Jaden Highway and is now being reinstalled in Lainya Town. Its restoration is expected to be accompanied by traditional Pojulu cultural ceremonies. Speaking to Access Radio on Sunday, Bida Lokule Moses, a resident of Lainya Town, said the project reflects progress and development in the county.

“This historical stone is very important for us, the people here. I am happy because Lainya is becoming beautiful again, and we hope this development will continue to demonstrate our unity,” he said.

Another resident, Monika Joice, praised the county government for preserving the monument and promoting the community’s heritage.

“The Gombura Statue has been here for a long time and represents our history and unity as the people of Lainya. I am thankful to the County Commissioner for the good work being done in the town, and we hope the project will be completed before the Independence Day celebrations,” she said.

On Sunday, Lainya County Commissioner Huda Mika Laila, accompanied by county officials and security leaders, visited the construction site to assess the progress of the statue and the surrounding roundabout, which is being developed as part of efforts to beautify the town. During the inspection, Commissioner Laila called on local youth to support the ongoing construction works and contribute to the development of the county. She welcomed the progress achieved so far and commended county authorities and officials for their commitment and active involvement in completing the roundabout and statue project. The Gombura monument remains an important historical landmark for the Pojulu community and serves as a symbol of cultural pride and heritage for the people of Lainya County.
