(LAINYA COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Lainya County, Hon. Robert Lasu John Morris, has witnessed the start of the reinstallation of the Gombura statue in Lainya town, following its earlier removal to allow for road construction works. The ceremony took place on 1 January 2026 and brought together county officials, traditional leaders and community members.
The Gombura statue is widely recognised as an important cultural symbol of the Pojulu people. It had been temporarily removed during the construction of the Agrey Jaden Highway, a major infrastructure project linking parts of Central Equatoria. County authorities said the decision to reinstall the statue reflects efforts to balance development needs with the protection of cultural heritage.
Traditional rituals and cultural performances formed a central part of the ceremony. Elders led blessings according to local customs, while community groups performed dances that highlighted the historical and cultural value of the Gombura statue. The event underscored the role of cultural symbols in strengthening identity and social cohesion in South Sudan communities.
County officials confirmed that technical work on the reinstallation has already begun. An engineer is on site overseeing the process, which is expected to take several weeks. Authorities said the exact completion date will be announced once construction milestones are confirmed.
Speaking during the event, Hon. Robert Lasu John Morris praised the Pojulu community for safeguarding their traditions despite the pressures of modern development. He encouraged residents to continue working together and supporting the project to ensure that the statue is restored safely and respectfully.
Local leaders said the return of the Gombura statue goes beyond physical restoration. They described it as a symbol of unity and continuity at a time when many communities across South Sudan are seeking to protect their cultural identity while embracing development.
The reinstallation project also reflects broader efforts by county administrations in Central Equatoria to integrate cultural considerations into public works. Officials noted that cultural landmarks play an important role in community life and should be preserved alongside roads, markets and other infrastructure.
The Gombura statue reinstallation is expected to become a focal point in Lainya town once completed, serving both as a cultural landmark and as a reminder of the county’s heritage.
