(WASHINGTON) – A United States congresswoman has announced plans to introduce legislation that would halt all immigration from Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan, describing the three African nations as serious threats to American security.
Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina made the announcement through her official office on June 25. She labelled the three countries as extremely unstable and argued that accepting their citizens endangers communities across the United States.
The proposed bill seeks to block entry of nationals from the three countries. Mace said American safety must come before the interests of foreign nationals. She stated that her country would not import instability or ignore warning signs any longer.
Mace added that Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan rank among the most unstable nations in the world. She warned that the United States must avoid what she called the mistakes of European immigration policies that she claimed have caused disorder and loss of life.
The congresswoman also said immigration from the three countries raises wider concerns about national security and the ability of newcomers to integrate. She claimed that a systematic invasion is taking place and insisted her side refuses to accept it.
The proposal mirrors the strict immigration approach of President Donald Trump. During his first term, Trump introduced a travel ban that restricted entry from several Muslim majority countries, including Somalia and Sudan.
Since returning to office, Trump has expanded deportation efforts and imposed additional entry restrictions on nationals of several countries. He has repeatedly called for a permanent stop to migration from what he has called third world countries.
The bill has not yet been formally presented in the United States Congress. It would still need to pass through the full legislative process before becoming law.
