The launch of the Community Internet Initiative in Yei River County
(YEI COUNTY)-A new push to expand digital access and innovation is taking shape in Yei River County following the launch of the Internet Initiative at the Community Creativity for Development (CC4D) Bright Maker Space.
The initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide by providing young people and the wider community with reliable internet access, practical digital skills, and a platform to explore innovation and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the launch on Monday, May 4, 2026, CC4D leader Matthew Lubari said the organization is focused on equipping youth with skills that can translate into sustainable livelihoods.
“As CC4D, our main aim is to connect communities, empower the youths and bridge the digital divide. How do we do that? We do training in computer applications, training on repair and maintenance on electronic devices cause when your phone breakdown you will not be able to communicate, so the training is set to equip youths to be self-employed,” he said.
He explained that in many cases, a broken device can disrupt communication entirely, which is why the program emphasizes hands-on skills that enable young people to earn a living and become self-reliant. Despite the increasing use of digital devices, Lubari noted that limited internet connectivity remains a major obstacle in the county, affecting businesses, education, and everyday communication.
“The lack of connectivity in Yei is still a serious challenge. While the use of digital devices is growing, poor internet access continues to hold back businesses, prevent students from learning effectively, and limit teachers from accessing research and new teaching methods. That is why this initiative is so important,” he added.
The Secretary-General of the Yei Civil Society Forum welcomed the project, describing it as a timely and much-needed intervention. He praised CC4D for bringing modern digital services closer to the community and urged residents to take ownership of the initiative.
“In many cases, organizations bring very good ideas, but community support is not always strong,” he said. “When we have shared resources like solar systems, it would be unfortunate if the community destroys them. I also call upon the area chief to ensure proper security.”
Community Creativity for Development (CC4D) is a youth-led, community-based organization that works to empower young people, women, and marginalized groups through specialized digital skills training and electronic device repair programs.
