(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – The National Ministry of Roads and Bridges has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
The agreement will fund a feasibility study for the construction of Tali International Airport in Terekeka County, Central Equatoria.
Minister of Roads, Simon Majok Mijak, confirmed the MoU shortly after returning from Nairobi, Kenya, where the agreement was signed. He said representatives from the Chinese company will soon arrive in Juba to begin the study.
The Tali International Airport project was first approved by the Cabinet in 2011. The airport is intended to serve as a major international gateway for South Sudan and improve transport links in Central Equatoria and beyond.
The feasibility study will examine the technical, financial and environmental requirements for the airport. This includes assessing the runway, terminal buildings, support infrastructure and potential commercial opportunities.
Officials statements say the project is expected to attract investment, create jobs and strengthen South Sudan’s regional connectivity.
South Sudan currently has four international airports in Juba, Rumbek, Malakal and Wau. The Tali project would make Central Equatoria home to the fifth international airport and at least two airports within the state, strengthening the region’s connectivity.
