(JUBA) – The Minister of Roads and Bridges in Central Equatoria State, Hon. Clement Maring Samuel, has presented two reports on the proposed diversion of roads around Juba International Airport. He was joined in the presentation by Hon. Michael Lopuke Lotyam, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority.
The reports were submitted on Monday following consultations with the national Ministry of Roads and Bridges and the Civil Aviation Authority.
Officials say the discussions are part of wider efforts to address challenges around road access to the airport, which serves as the country’s busiest international gateway.
The first report focused on a meeting held at the Civil Aviation Authority headquarters where proposals for diverting road traffic in airport areas were discussed. The plans are intended to improve safety and efficiency by separating airport operations from public road use.
The second report summarised a joint site inspection carried out on Saturday. The visit included the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, senior state officials and representatives from the national Ministry of Roads and Bridges. The inspection assessed the areas where diversions may be introduced and considered possible impacts on local communities.
Authorities believe the proposed road changes are necessary to support the continued operation and future expansion of Juba International Airport. The airport is vital for passenger travel, humanitarian operations and cargo transport, and officials argue that smoother road access will benefit both economic and social activities.
No specific cost figures have yet been shared.
The state government has said further consultations will be held with residents, transport operators and businesses before final decisions are made. Officials also indicated that more detailed technical studies will follow to determine the design, cost and timing of the diversions.
Juba International Airport remains one of the busiest and most strategic facilities in South Sudan, making any changes to its surrounding road network a matter of national interest
