
Yei County Health Director Michael Lugala Dies in Uganda at 66/Handout/Access Radio
(ARUA, UGANDA) – Michael Lugala, the longest serving civil servant in the Yei River County Health Department, has died at the age of 66. His family confirmed that he passed away on Monday, 25 August 2025, in Arua City, Uganda, after a period of illness.
Relatives said Lugala had been battling liver complications before his death. His passing was first announced by a family member, Wayi Godwil, who described him as a respected public servant who had dedicated his life to healthcare in Yei.
“It is with a heavy heart to announce the death of Yaba Michael Lugala, the County Health Director of Yei River County, which occurred in Arua yesterday after battling illness for some time. Arrangements are under way to repatriate his remains to Yei town. May his soul rest in peace.”

Lugala’s children also shared tributes online. His eldest son, Saba Sebastian, wrote: “Dad, we love you, but the Lord loved you more. Thank you for standing as a humanitarian servant and life saver. You fought a successful war of life. We will always remember you as a grateful father of all times.”
Media professionals who worked with Lugala described him as a leader, humanitarian and supporter of public communication. Daniel Friday Martin, a former correspondent with Eye Radio and Voice of America, said his death was a great loss for Yei and the wider South Sudanese community:
“I am saddened to hear of his passing. Lugala was a kind man and a great leader. He was not only a health official but also a humanitarian worker who supported the media and ensured the public was informed.”
He recalled how Lugala had helped journalists during the difficult period of 2016, when access to the internet was limited.
“Because information is power, the late provided me with office space and free internet access at the county health department to enable me to work. He was a media friendly personality who valued public awareness.”
Daniel extended his condolences to the family and community of Otogo Payam, Yei River County.
“I send my sincere condolences to Lugala’s children, Godi-Goda, Saba and the rest of the family. May his kind soul rest in eternal peace.”
