(JUBA) – Work on the new Terminal 3 at Juba International Airport is on track for its official opening on 9 July 2026, coinciding with South Sudan’s Independence Day celebrations.
The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the date this week, describing the facility as a major step towards better air services, safety and regional links.
The authority said the terminal will increase passenger capacity, improve operational efficiency and support wider economic growth:
It forms part of a national push to modernise aviation infrastructure and make Juba a more competitive entry point for the country.
Separately, a technical team has been sent to Malakal Airport to check the condition of the radar station and other key equipment. The delegation includes the Director of Flight Clearance, the Manager of Aviation Safety, Security and Regulations, and an Air Navigation Services Officer.
During the visit, the team met state government leaders, including the governor, as part of ongoing efforts to keep aviation facilities functioning and compliant with safety rules.
The Civil Aviation Authority said both the Juba terminal project and the Malakal inspection reflect a wider commitment to raising standards across South Sudan’s airports at a time when domestic and international travel demand is slowly rising.
The new terminal at Juba International Airport has been funded with support from development partners and the national government. Construction costs have not been disclosed in the latest update.
Once open, Terminal 3 is expected to help handle growing passenger numbers and support the work of airlines serving the country. Regional connectivity remains a priority for South Sudan as it seeks to strengthen trade and movement with neighbouring states.
South Sudan currently relies heavily on air transport due to limited road networks, especially during the rainy season. Keeping airports operational and up to standard is seen as vital for both humanitarian access and economic activity.
The Civil Aviation Authority thanked contractors, aviation partners and the public for their support and said more details on the opening programme would be shared closer to the date.
