(YAMBIO) – Traders in Western Equatoria State have told the state government that rising checkpoint fees, a disputed butchery shop sale, and growing security fears are hurting business operations across the region.
The concerns were raised during a meeting between the business community and Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa in the capital Yambio on Monday.
The Chairperson of the Western Equatoria State Chamber of Commerce, Lucky Justin Mbakadi, spoke on behalf of the traders. He said the increasing number of roadblocks and checkpoints has become a heavy financial load for those moving goods:
“The many checkpoints are affecting our businesses because we lose money at every roadblock.
We are also concerned about the sale of the butchery shop, which happened without informing traders.”
He told the governor that the sale of a long serving butchery shop was carried out without any consultation with the business community. The traders want answers on how the transaction took place.
Mbakadi also asked the governor to step in and ensure that 16 shops previously ordered returned to traders by the state government are handed back without further delay. Some traders at the meeting said the current business licensing system has become too difficult for many owners to navigate.
On security, Mbakadi condemned the recent disappearance of several boda boda riders and the killing of a football coach in Naduru Residential Area of Yambio. He called on the government and security agencies to deliver justice and hold those responsible to account.
Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa told the traders that his administration wants to build a fair, safe, and open space for businesses to grow. He urged them to carry on with their normal activities and promised their concerns would be dealt with.
On the security incidents, the governor said suspects have already been arrested in connection with the recent crimes. He added that investigations are still underway to bring everyone involved to justice.
The governor also warned that government and community land must not be sold illegally. He pledged to work hand in hand with the business community to protect their rights, improve safety and build a better business setting across Western Equatoria State.
