(YAMBIO) – Members of the Western Equatoria State Transitional Legislative Assembly began a three day training course on fiscal oversight on Tuesday, aimed at strengthening how lawmakers monitor public finances and government spending.
The training is supported by the state government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is designed to build the capacity of parliamentarians to carry out effective oversight of state finances, budgeting processes and public expenditure.
Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa officially opened the workshop. He said the training would give lawmakers the knowledge and tools they need to perform their oversight duties well:
“You are the voice and representatives of the people. UNDP is equipping you with the knowledge and tools needed to conduct oversight of government resources and the budget.”
He noted that parliamentary oversight goes beyond simply watching over public money. It also includes making sure there is accountability in all government activities.
The governor said that strengthening public financial management is a top concern for Western Equatoria State.
He added that bringing back public trust in state institutions is vital for building infrastructure, advancing peace and stability, improving early warning systems, delivering better services, and bringing communities together.
The Speaker of the Transitional State Legislative Assembly, Ann Tuna Richard, thanked the Ministry of Finance for arranging the training.
She called it an important move to boost the skills of legislators. She pointed out that members last attended a similar training in 2024:
“This training is important in building the capacity of members to effectively carry out their oversight role, which is one of Parliament’s core responsibilities,” the Speaker said.
She also praised Governor Badagbu for his leadership and his push for openness, accountability and sound public financial management in the state.
The training brought together members of the assembly and officials from key ministries. It is jointly backed by the Government of Western Equatoria State and UNDP as part of what the Office of the State Governor said are wider efforts to support good governance, accountability and proper handling of public resources.
