(JUBA) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State Rabi Mujung Emmanuel has held discussions with senior leadership of the National Prison Service of South Sudan (NPSSS) on plans to address critical challenges facing the Juba Central Prison.
The talks took place at the State Secretariat on Thursday and brought together the Governor and the Director General of NPSSS, Lt. Gen. Henry Kuany Aguar.
Mujung welcomed the prison authorities and reaffirmed his commitment to support efforts aimed at improving conditions in the state’s correctional facilities. He noted that the state government will work closely with the National Prison Service to ease overcrowding and improve rehabilitation programmes for inmates.
Following the meeting, Lt. Gen. Juma Doka Legge, the Director of Prisons in Central Equatoria State, told the press that immediate plans are in place to construct a maximum security prison. The new facility will be located along the Juba to Terekeka Road and is expected to reduce congestion at Juba Central Prison.
Lt. Gen. Doka also revealed that two new wards will be added to the Terekeka County Prison to help ease the current strain on existing prison infrastructure.
In addition to expanding capacity, the leadership agreed on the importance of rehabilitation and training for inmates. Plans include setting up a technical training centre where prisoners will be equipped with vocational skills to help them reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.
Prison overcrowding has been a persistent issue across South Sudan, with Juba Central Prison among the most affected facilities.
No financial figures were immediately released concerning costs.
