(NIMULE) – A peace dialogue aimed at ending gang related violence has started in Nimule Municipality, bringing together five rival groups who have been a long standing source of insecurity in the Eastern Equatoria border town.
The meeting was held at Jerusalem Church and marks the first organised attempt by the groups themselves to seek reconciliation and find a way to coexist peacefully.
Local leaders and security officials welcomed the move, saying it represents a shift from confrontation to dialogue in one of South Sudan’s busiest border towns.
Gang clashes have repeatedly disrupted life in Nimule, a commercial hub connecting South Sudan to Uganda. Residents have raised concerns about robberies, assaults and fear created by the activities of armed youth.
The current dialogue follows an agreement reached by the gangs to put aside weapons and resolve disputes without violence. This comes shortly after municipal authorities endorsed a new bylaw targeting lawbreakers and announced firm action against those involved in criminal activity.
Earlier this month, Nimule Municipal Council held a security meeting in which leaders warned that armed youth would face arrest and prosecution if the violence continued. The authorities also called on community elders and religious leaders to support efforts to restore calm.
Mayor Longa Fuli’s press unit confirmed the opening of the talks, saying it demonstrates a new level of responsibility among the groups that were once seen as a threat to stability:
“The dialogue gives hope for a safer Nimule where young people focus on education, work, and community development rather than conflict,” the Mayor’s office said.
Residents have expressed cautious optimism, noting that previous promises of peace were short lived. However, with direct involvement of both the gangs and local authorities, many believe this dialogue could mark a turning point.
Nimule’s location at the border with Uganda makes security a major concern for trade, movement of people and the wider economy. Local businesses have welcomed the peace initiative, saying a reduction in violence would restore investor confidence and allow the town to thrive.
The peace process is expected to continue with further meetings and follow up actions, including disarmament and reintegration programmes for the youth involved.
Authorities, including the Mayor’s office say success will depend on sustained commitment by the groups, support from the community and close monitoring by the municipal administration and state government.
