(LAINYA COUNTY) – Authorities in Lainya County, Central Equatoria State, have confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with the alleged gang rape of two underage girls in Limuro village, Wuji Payam, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Paramount Chief Jackson Lumori, the victims, aged 15 and 16, were attacked on their way home from school by two adult men employed by a local timber company. He said both suspects were apprehended and handed over to the police for investigation.
“These two girls were raped, and we have already secured the arrest of the two perpetrators. We have referred the victims to Jamara Health Centre for medical care to prevent infections and unwanted pregnancies,” Chief Lumori said.
Lainya County Chairlady Harriet Roba Joseph strongly condemned the incident, warning that rape cases were increasing in the community without sufficient legal action.
“I am not happy with what happened yesterday because rape cases are on the rise and nobody is talking about it or ensuring perpetrators face justice,” she said.
Harriet alleged that in recent months, armed herders had also assaulted girls in the county without the victims receiving justice. She urged the government to enforce the rule of law and punish offenders, warning that lack of accountability has forced many underage girls into early marriage, unwanted pregnancies, and school dropouts.
She called on the government, non governmental organisations, civil society groups and media outlets to launch civic education programmes highlighting the dangers of rape, the need for protection of women and girls and the importance of legal accountability.
Philip Lukudu, a gender police officer in Lainya County, confirmed that his office had received complaints regarding the incident and said the suspects will face legal action.
Major Noah Marang Joseph, the Lainya County police inspector, said his office is awaiting a full report before beginning formal investigations.
“As police, my office is yet to receive the comprehensive report. Once we have it, we will investigate and follow all required procedures under the law,” he stated.
