(LAINYA COUNTY) – Leaders, women’s groups and human rights activists in Central Equatoria State are asking the police to make sure justice is done after two young schoolgirls were raped in Limuro village, Lainya County, on 12 August 2025.
Paramount Chief Jackson Lumori said the girls, aged 15 and 16, were attacked on their way home from school by two men who worked for a timber company. He said the suspects were caught and handed to the police.
Police in Lainya confirmed the arrests on 13 August. The two men were later taken to Yei because Lainya does not have a prison. One of the men is a Ugandan and the other is South Sudanese.
Women’s leader Harriet Roba Joseph said she fears the case may be ignored unless people keep pushing. She asked police, government leaders and human rights groups to make sure the case is fully investigated.
“I am asking those in power to follow up this case. Justice must be done to stop such crimes happening again,” Roba told Access Radio.
Chief Lumori also called for a fair process.
“The men are now in Yei prison. We are waiting for updates from police, but we want justice for the victims, who are still traumatised.”
Police gender officer Philip Lukudu confirmed the suspects are in Yei but said the investigation has not started because more information is needed.
Human rights defender Victor Batali said the attack is a serious crime and a violation of human rights. He reminded authorities that under Section 247 of the South Sudan Penal Code Act (2008), rape carries up to 14 years in prison, and children under 18 cannot give consent.
“This is a painful crime,” Batali said. “The police must act quickly to hold the suspects responsible and support the victims.”
