(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, on Wednesday received the leadership of the Greater Yei Prison Service at his office, bringing together both the outgoing and incoming directors following a change in command.
During the visit, the prison leadership formally briefed the commissioner on the official transfer of responsibilities from Gen. Franco Wani to Gen. Jackson Lumori, who has been appointed as the new director of the Greater Yei Prison Service. Gen. Wani has been transferred to Terekeka as part of routine government changes.
Gen. Franco Wani thanked the county leadership for its support and close cooperation with the prison service during his time in office. He described his transfer as part of normal government administration and said he was confident that professionalism and service delivery would continue under the new leadership.
The incoming director, Gen. Jackson Lumori, expressed appreciation for the warm reception from county authorities. He shared his priorities for the prison service, which include involving inmates in productive activities such as farming and vocational work. He said these efforts are intended to support rehabilitation, skills development and self reliance among inmates.
Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme welcomed the peaceful transition and praised both directors for their professionalism. He reaffirmed the commitment of the county government to work closely with the prison service to strengthen security, support rehabilitation and ensure respect for human dignity within correctional facilities.
After the briefing, the commissioner visited the Greater Yei Prison, where he addressed inmates directly. He encouraged them to avoid criminal behaviour, take part in rehabilitation programmes and prepare themselves for positive reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
During the visit, the commissioner donated food items to support inmate welfare. The donation included 20 bags of maize flour, five bags of beans, five jerrycans of cooking oil and two packets of salt. He also provided a cash contribution of 500,000 South Sudanese pounds, equivalent to about 70 United States dollars, to assist the prison service in meeting basic needs of inmates.
The Office of the Commissioner called on residents of Yei River County to continue promoting peace, cooperation and respect for the law. It also pledged ongoing support to institutions that work to uphold justice, security and the wellbeing of communities across the county.
