South Sudan Mourns Passing of Retired Bishop Nathaniel Garang/Handout Photo
(JUBA) – Tributes are being paid across South Sudan following the death of retired Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth Jangdit, a senior church leader remembered for his spiritual leadership and role during the country’s liberation struggle.
The retired bishop died on 24th February 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya. Church members, community leaders and state authorities have described his passing as a loss to both the faith community and the country.
Bishop Garang served as the first consecrated Diocesan Bishop of Bor in 1984 in Juba. During years of conflict he travelled widely across the country to offer spiritual support, encouragement and guidance to displaced civilians and members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and Movement.
Religious leaders say he played an important role in promoting unity and peace in South Sudan. He also mentored many clergy and church workers who later served communities across the country.
He was among church figures who took part in the Moya Sukun conference held in Juba in 1995. Participants at the meeting offered guidance to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army during the conflict period, at a time when several towns including Yei, Maridi and Yambio were later recaptured from Sudanese government forces.
Messages of condolence have been extended to the family of the late bishop, the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and the people of Jonglei State.
Authorities in Central Equatoria State said they stand with the bereaved family and church community during the mourning period and as preparations are made to receive his remains and honour his life of service to faith and society.
