(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, has criticised the decision by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to suspend its medical operations in the area due to security concerns.
The decision has sparked concern among local authorities and residents, many of whom rely on humanitarian assistance for basic health services.
Commissioner Taban questioned why MSF had withdrawn from Yei while continuing to operate in other parts of South Sudan experiencing similar or greater levels of conflict.
“MSF is operating in other parts of the country amidst conflicts. They are not supposed to shut down activities in Yei unless the government declares the area a security risk,” said Taban.
He called on international humanitarian organisations to remain in the county and continue their support to the local population. He also acknowledged and thanked the development partners and NGOs still operating in the region despite ongoing security challenges.
“We appreciate those partners who have continued to deliver services to the people of Yei. We urge others not to abandon our communities,” the commissioner added.

The statement comes as MSF becomes the latest humanitarian agency to suspend work in Yei and Morobo counties. The medical charity is one of the few international organisations providing free and accessible medical care in the area, making the suspension particularly impactful for vulnerable communities.
While MSF has cited insecurity as the key reason for halting its services, other humanitarian organisations have pledged to remain active. Slash Moses, the project manager for Finn Church Aid (FCA), confirmed that his organisation will continue operations despite the risks.
“We shall continue to support all the communities as humanitarian workers, despite the conflicts and the abductions of some of our staff and citizens,” said Moses.
He called on fellow humanitarian partners not to let fear prevent them from serving communities in need.
Humanitarian agencies play a critical role in Yei River and surrounding counties, particularly in areas like health care, education and food distribution.
While no specific figures have been provided, local residents say the services previously provided by MSF were essential, especially for those unable to afford private health care.
