(JUBA) – The Government of South Sudan is intensifying efforts to secure funding for major infrastructure projects, with road construction at the centre of its plans to improve national connectivity and economic growth.
Officials say the new road links will expand market access, reduce transport costs, stimulate trade and strengthen regional integration. They are also expected to improve delivery of essential services such as healthcare and education by making remote areas easier to reach.
The renewed push follows a meeting on Friday between Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel and Vice President and Chairperson of the Infrastructure Cluster, Taban Deng Gai. The two leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing projects, assessed priority needs and discussed ways to address delays.
River transport was another key topic. They identified obstacles such as illegal taxation and physical barriers on waterways, agreeing to work towards removing them. Officials believe that improving river transport could cut costs for traders and boost service delivery to communities along major rivers.
In their remarks, the leaders called for stronger collaboration between government institutions, development partners, and the private sector. They said fast tracking sustainable infrastructure would help power the country’s economic growth and create more opportunities for local communities.
