(BOR) – A total of 838 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded UN medals for their contributions to peace and humanitarian support in the regions of Bor, Akobo and Pibor.
The decorated personnel, including 12 women, were recognised for their efforts in protecting civilians, escorting humanitarian convoys and providing essential medical and veterinary services to communities across Jonglei State.
The awards reflect the dedication and professionalism of Indian Blue Helmets working in some of the most challenging areas of South Sudan.
According to UNMISS, Indian peacekeepers played a critical role in ensuring the safe delivery of aid in remote and conflict prone areas. Their protection work extended to supporting internally displaced persons and vulnerable populations affected by ongoing insecurity and climate related displacement.
In addition to security operations, Indian military doctors and veterinarians conducted medical outreach programmes, offering treatment to hundreds of people and livestock in hard to reach villages. These efforts have helped to address basic health and animal care needs in areas where access to formal services remains extremely limited.
The medal ceremony, held at a UN base in Bor, highlighted the peacekeepers’ one year service to the mission and their contributions to peacekeeping priorities under the UN’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative.
Senior officials commended the Indian contingent for their commitment to the UN mandate in South Sudan, noting their role in promoting stability and supporting humanitarian operations.
India is one of the largest troop contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions globally, and its forces have served in South Sudan since the mission was established in 2011.
The presence of women peacekeepers also reflects efforts to strengthen gender inclusion in international peace and security roles.
