(JUBA) – Farmers, herders and fishers across South Sudan can tune in to practical agricultural advice and weekly weather updates through the Zira Tanna programme, as a major livestock vaccination campaign also gets underway in Unity State.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has invited listeners to follow the Zira Tanna programme, which means “Our Farm”, on two radio stations.
The programme airs on Radio Miraya 101 FM every Saturday from 6:00 am to 7:00 am. It also airs on Eye Radio 98.6 FM every Friday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm and every Saturday from 8:00 am to 9:00 am.
This week, the Eye Radio broadcast will discuss the importance of water in agriculture in Unity State. The Radio Miraya broadcast will focus on fisheries, farming and livestock activities in Pigi County of Jonglei State.
FAO described the programme as a trusted source for practical insights into agriculture, livestock and fisheries. It explores how these vital sectors strengthen food security, promote healthier diets and improve quality of life.
Listeners can expect expert advice, inspiring stories and new ideas to support farmers, herders and fishers across the country. The programme also provides regular weather updates and forecasts for the week ahead.
In related news, the State Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, in collaboration with FAO, has officially launched a livestock vaccination campaign in Rubkhona County, Unity State. The campaign is targeting more than 400,000 heads of cattle across seven counties.
With the rainy season approaching, increased livestock movement and grazing raise the risk of disease outbreaks. FAO said the vaccination drive protects animals against priority diseases and helps prevent losses before they happen.
The campaign is being implemented by FAO under the Climate Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods (CRAL) Project, funded by the United Kingdom (UK). It aims to produce healthier and more resilient herds, safeguarding the livestock assets that communities depend on for milk, meat and income.
