(KAJO-KEJI COUNTY) – A farmer in Kajo-Keji County, Central Equatoria State, says he is celebrating a strong harvest after reaping good yields from his beans farm this season.
Anyik Chaplain Mogga told Access Radio in a WhatsApp interview on Monday that he has secured enough food for his family and still has a surplus to sell in local markets:
“I am happy because I have harvested good beans this season, and this is good for my family and the market.”
Anyik explained that he turned to farming as a way to fight hunger and reduce poverty in his community. He believes that agriculture offers solutions to food shortages and unemployment in South Sudan.
He revealed that he cultivated two and a half feddans of beans and cassava during the last rainy season in Litoba Boma, Kangapo I Payam. He encouraged other South Sudanese, especially young people and those in work, to consider farming.
However, he pointed out that farmers in the county continue to face major challenges. Low market demand, poor road networks, a shortage of quality seeds and the lack of farming tools remain obstacles for many in the area.
Anyik called on non-governmental organisations to extend both financial and technical support to progressive farmers so that the region can continue producing enough food.
He also urged food production companies to procure crops from local farmers rather than relying heavily on imports from neighbouring countries.

Anyik further appealed to both the state and national governments to provide tractors, quality seeds, grain stores, access to larger markets and improved security in the region. He also stressed the need for better road construction to help farmers deliver their produce to markets on time.
“Farming is a journey of ups and downs, but the perseverance and resilience of farmers should inspire support from government, development partners, NGOs and private companies,” he said.
