
South Sudan, UK Discuss Trade Reforms in Juba Talks/PHOTO CREDITS: National Trade and Industry Portal
(JUBA) – The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, has held bilateral talks with the Deputy Ambassador of the United Kingdom to South Sudan to discuss trade reforms, economic stability and regional security.
The meeting, held in Juba on Friday, 6 February 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation between South Sudan and the United Kingdom in support of economic growth and good governance.
The Deputy Ambassador thanked the Minister and her team for the reception and praised her leadership in promoting trade relations and advancing policy reforms. She said the United Kingdom remains committed to supporting South Sudan’s development efforts.
Discussions also covered the wider economic and political situation in the country. The two sides reviewed the security situation in Jonglei State and ongoing efforts by the government to clear civil service salary arrears.
Minister Atong Kuol thanked the UK Government for its continued support, citing the long standing ties between the two countries. She said international partnerships remain important for South Sudan’s recovery and growth.
The Deputy Ambassador stressed the importance of dialogue in building lasting peace. In response, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace, stability, and national unity.
During the meeting, the Minister outlined key priority projects aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on oil revenues. These include the Melut Sugar Project, the Wau Fruit Canning Factory, and the Yirol Oil Mill Project.
She said these projects are expected to create jobs, boost local production, and improve food security across several states.
The Minister also briefed the Deputy Ambassador on recent achievements by the Ministry. She said South Sudan has cleared its outstanding arrears with the World Trade Organization, improving the country’s standing in global trade systems.
She added that the government has ratified South Sudan’s participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area, following recent engagements in Geneva. This move is expected to expand access to regional markets and attract investment.
Hon. Atong Kuol said President Salva Kiir remains committed to peace and security as a foundation for democratic processes and economic recovery. She noted that the President has formed a committee made up of political parties, respected public figures, and civil society groups to oversee preparations for credible elections.
Officials from both sides said the talks reflected shared interest in promoting stability, trade, and inclusive growth in South Sudan.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry said it will continue to engage development partners to support reforms and strengthen the national economy.
