(GUBA, ETHIOPIA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Tuesday joined African and Caribbean leaders in Guba, a rural district in Ethiopia’s Benishangul Gumuz region, to witness the official opening of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The project is Africa’s largest hydroelectric facility and is being described as a milestone in regional development and cooperation.
In his speech at the ceremony, Kiir praised Ethiopia’s determination and national vision, calling the GERD “a symbol of unity, sacrifice and determination.” He said the achievement demonstrates what a nation can accomplish when its people stand together.
“The dam is not just a project. It is a symbol of unity, sacrifice and integration,” Kiir told the gathering of dignitaries and citizens. “Ethiopia is not only a neighbour. We are brothers and sisters with a shared history, friendship and a common future. That is why today we celebrate with you.”
The South Sudanese leader highlighted the spirit of pan Africanism, stressing that the success of one nation strengthens the resilience of the wider region.
“We believe the progress of one nation is the progress of all. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities for peace, stability and growth,” he said.
In a key announcement, Kiir revealed that his government is preparing to sign a power sharing agreement with Ethiopia. He said the agreement would help provide electricity to towns, villages, schools and hospitals in South Sudan, opening up wider opportunities for development.
The Head of State ended his address on a note of cooperation and optimism.
“May the dam bring power, strength and prosperity to your people and to our region.”
The GERD, constructed on the Blue Nile River, cost an estimated 5 billion US dollars, which is about 23 trillion South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) at the current exchange rate of 1 USD = 4,600 SSP in September 2025. When fully operational, the dam will generate over 6,000 megawatts of electricity, positioning Ethiopia as a regional energy hub and supporting economic growth across East Africa.
The event drew leaders from across Africa and the Caribbean.
