(JUBA CITY) – Senior government officials say construction of the long awaited Juba-Lainya-Yei Morobo-Kaya road will begin early next year.
The announcement followed a meeting on 4 December 2025 between the national minister of roads and bridges, Peter Lam Both, and the Central Equatoria State governor, Emmanuel Adil Anthony. The two leaders discussed major national road plans expected to start in the coming year.
They said the priority projects include the Juba-Yei-Kaya road, the Yei-Tore-Maridi road network and the Juba Lobonok road, all within Central Equatoria State.
Officials noted that the works aim to improve access to markets and strengthen infrastructure to support the movement of goods and people. They said better roads will help improve services and speed up economic growth in the state.
Both leaders also pointed to the need for closer cooperation to support regional trade and integration.
Minister Peter Lam Both wrote on his personal Facebook page that he and the governor had a productive discussion on national road projects that will begin next year. He said the aim is to improve service delivery and ease access to markets for people in Central Equatoria and other parts of South Sudan.
Communities in Morobo, Yei and Lainya counties have for years appealed to both the national and state governments to make the road a priority. Some residents view the project as an important gift for the greater Yei region.
However, the minister and the governor did not give details on the method of construction or the exact timetable for work to start.
The Juba-Lainya-Yei-Morobo Kaya road is one of the key routes in areas formerly held by the SPLA during the liberation struggle. The road remains a major link between South Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
