(DUK COUNTY) – At least 17 people have been killed and several others wounded after armed attackers ambushed two humanitarian vehicles belonging to the John Dau Foundation in Duk County, Jonglei State.
The attack occurred on Monday, 29 June 2026, at around 2:00 PM on the road between Pajut and Payuel at Paguith within Payuel Payam.
The vehicles were clearly marked with the foundation’s insignia and were transporting staff returning from a humanitarian mission.
Duk County Commissioner John Chatim Ruei formally condemned the attack in a statement, describing it as a heinous and barbaric assault carried out by armed Murle youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims affected by this senseless act of violence. With profound sorrow, we acknowledge the tragic loss of 17 innocent lives and the wounding of others.”
He said the attack had shocked the community and outraged all peace loving citizens:
“Such acts of brutality against humanitarian organisations, whose sole mission is to serve and uplift communities, are unacceptable. They constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and an affront to human dignity.”
He called upon the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to refrain from further attacks, respect geographical boundaries, and honour their responsibility to maintain peace.
“Violence of this nature undermines stability and threatens the lives of innocent civilians,” he said.
Chatim urged all citizens of Duk County to remain united, uphold peace and harmony, and resist any attempts to sow division.
He further called upon the Government of South Sudan and relevant local authorities to take swift and decisive measures to restore security, protect humanitarian workers, and safeguard the lives of the people:
“Duk County stands firm in rejecting violence and reaffirms its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human life.”
