(DUK COUNTY) – At least 17 people have been killed and nine others injured after armed attackers ambushed humanitarian convoys belonging to the John Dau Foundation in Duk County, Jonglei State.
The attack occurred on Monday as the convoys were returning from a joint humanitarian training organised by the World Food Programme and Action Against Hunger.
The vehicles came under fire along the road between Payuel Payam and Pajut in Panyang Payam, according to a statement issued by the John Dau Foundation.
The foundation said the vehicles were clearly marked with its insignia, making the assault a deliberate attack on humanitarian workers and relief operations.
Five of those killed were JDF employees. Two additional staff members and a driver sustained serious injuries. Several civilians were also among the dead and wounded.
The foundation described the attack as the darkest moment in the organisation’s history:
“This incident represents the most grievous and sombre chapter in our history,” JDF said in a statement.
This calculated act of violence has resulted in the tragic loss of five dedicated JDF employees.”
The foundation noted that while it has suffered losses during previous humanitarian missions, Monday’s attack marks its deadliest incident to date.
It called for justice for the victims and renewed efforts to ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel delivering lifesaving assistance in conflict-affected communities.
“We remain steadfast in our humanitarian commitment to healing, resilience and peace.”
Duk County Commissioner John Chatim condemned the attack as a grave violation of humanitarian principles. He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and called for enhanced security measures to protect aid workers and civilians operating in the area.
Chatim blamed suspected armed criminals from the neighbouring Greater Pibor Administrative Area for carrying out the ambush. He added that security forces have been deployed to pursue those responsible.
The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, and Commissioner Chatim have both deployed recovery and security teams to the scene to coordinate emergency response and ensure safety.
