Girls in PoC Find Support Through Leadership Club/Handout
(MALAKAL, UPPER NILE STATE) – The Girls Leadership Club in Malakal is helping young women in the Protection of Civilians site build confidence, continue their education and work toward their goals, despite the difficult conditions they face.
Susan Daniel, a student at Vision Academy Secondary School and a member of the National Press Club South Sudan (NPC SS), said life in the PoC remains challenging, but she continues to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
She explained that there are days when her energy is low and the obstacles feel too heavy, yet she believes that progress comes through effort. “There is no soft life without struggle,” she said.
Susan said her involvement in the Girls Leadership Club, the mentorship sessions and her role as the treasurer have restored her sense of purpose.
She said the support she receives motivates her to stay focused and to believe that she can one day become a leader who helps other girls who face the same difficulties.
Her story reflects the wider impact of community programmes that guide young women in areas affected by conflict.
Mr Poverty Alfred, the Executive Director of the National Press Club South Sudan, said the determination shown by girls like Susan should be recognised and supported.
He urged students to remain committed to their education, saying it is an asset that cannot be taken away. He encouraged young people to stay strong even when school becomes difficult, because education can open future opportunities.
Alfred said girls’ perseverance brings hope to their families and communities. He also cautioned strongly against early marriage, adding that entering marriage without clear personal goals can limit a girl’s progress.
He advised girls to continue pushing forward and to keep their ambitions in sight as they work towards a better future.
The NPC SS appealed to parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the efforts of girls in school. The club said investing in girls’ education and leadership skills will help them contribute to the country’s development.
The organisation said it remains committed to helping young women overcome challenges and build the confidence they need to succeed.
It added that the progress of girls in Malakal shows what can be achieved when they are supported by strong community networks.
