(JUBA) – Central Equatoria State Governor, Lt Gen Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, has called on families, churches and government institutions to work together to restore moral values, promote peace and protect young people in Juba from harmful behaviour. He made the remarks on Sunday during a church service at St Elizabeth of Hungary Parish.
Mujung said efforts to rebuild society must begin at home. He noted that while the government is working through law enforcement, education and youth programmes, these efforts need to be supported by strong family guidance and spiritual leadership.
He said that the home should be a place where discipline is taught and that the church should help shape the conscience of the community.
He encouraged religious institutions to take a more active role in peacebuilding, saying that many young people involved in holdout groups remain part of their communities and need support. He said prayer and continued dialogue have the ability to influence people in ways that politics often cannot.
Juba City Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani shared similar concerns, saying the city is losing many young people to alcohol and drug use. He called on parents to take responsibility for guiding their children.
He said that five young people are being buried each week due to alcohol and drug related causes, and that addressing this issue requires cooperation between families and the government.
Rev Fr Nicholas Kiri, who led the service, urged young people to support their peers who may be living risky lifestyles. He asked them to encourage their friends to return to the church and to take part in open conversations that promote positive change.
The Governor and city leaders said they will continue engaging communities and church groups as part of wider efforts to promote peace and protect young people in Juba.
