(JUBA) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has issued a series of wide ranging decrees affecting the national government, the ruling SPLM leadership and state administrations, bringing several changes to senior positions and returning some officials to roles they previously held.
President Kiir confirmed the return of James Wani Igga as the Second Vice President responsible for the Economic Cluster. Wani Igga also resumes his role as the First Deputy Chairman of the SPLM.
His reappointment marks a renewed presence in national decision making after earlier speculation about changes within the party and government.
A number of senior ministers were removed from their posts. Those relieved include Michael Makuei Lueth as Minister of Information, Joseph Geng Akec as Minister of Justice, Simon Mijok Mijak as Minister of Roads and Bridges, Josephine Napon as Minister of Environment, and Rabi Mujung Emmanuel as Governor of Central Equatoria State.
New appointments were announced to replace them. Peter Lam Both has been named Minister of Roads and Bridges, taking over from Simon Mijok Mijak. Former presidential press secretary Ateny Wek Ateny has been appointed Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services.
Michael Makuei Lueth has been reassigned to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. Mabior Garang de Mabior becomes the new Minister of Environment, replacing Josephine Napon.
In Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony has been returned to the position of Governor, replacing Rabi Mujung Emmanuel who served in the office for less than six months. The state government updated its official online profiles on Monday evening to reflect Governor Adil’s reinstatement.
Other appointments include Ambassdor Achol Abel Aguek, who has been restored to Grade One Ambassador and named the Presidential Envoy to the Middle East.
The President also appointed General Saeed Chawul Lom as the new Inspector General of Police, replacing General Abraham Manyuat Peter Ngong.
The reshuffle marks one of the most extensive sets of political appointments in recent months, affecting ministries central to information, justice, roads, environment and state governance.
