(WAU) – The Wau Interschool Co-Curricular Association (WISCCA) was officially inaugurated on Thursday at the Ministry of General Education and Instruction headquarters in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, with government officials, school representatives and students from across the region in attendance.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, the Minister of General Education and Instruction and the Mayor of Wau Town, alongside other departmental heads.
A key highlight of the event was a demonstration debate between Friendship Secondary School and Wau Light Secondary School, centred on the resolution: “This House Believes That Peace is a Collective Responsibility That Requires Global Cooperation and Solidarity.”
The debate served as a sample activity under WISCCA’s broader programme and aimed to encourage critical thinking and public speaking among learners.
The debate was adjudicated by a three member panel comprising Erick from Homing Dove, the Headteacher of Bright Future Secondary School, and Chief Judge Ustaz Dut Riak Buoi. After a closely contested session, Friendship Secondary School was declared the winner, while Wau Light Secondary School received commendation for their effort.
The education ministry assured full backing to WISCCA’s leadership, with the Minister of General Education and Instruction personally pledging institutional support to enable the association to grow and implement its vision.
The Governor also confirmed the legitimacy and importance of WISCCA, saying it would help prepare students for national competitions. He promised to assist in activities such as debates, sports and other talent based engagements that enrich the educational experience of learners.
According to organisers, the launch was attended by students and staff from 15 schools across Wau and surrounding areas, signalling widespread support for the initiative.
The event also reflected a growing emphasis on holistic education, where learners engage in both academic and non academic skills development.
The Governor and Minister both praised the transparency and fairness of the debate judging process.
