(WAU) – The Luo of Bahr el Ghazal Students’ Association in Universities and Higher Institutes in Juba (L.B.G.S.A.I.U.H.I.J) has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Paramount Chief Pasquale Bak Acho, who passed away at Wau Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, after a short illness.
Chief Pasquale Bak Acho served the Greater Wau North area of Udici Payam, Jur River County in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, and is remembered for a long standing record of traditional leadership and public service.
According to the student association, he held the position of paramount chief for 42 years, having taken over from his uncle, Uriu Unguce Uriu, in 1984 during the period of the then Sudanese government. He continued to serve after the independence of South Sudan in 2011 until his passing.
In a condolence message issued by the student association, the Luo students conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the family of the late chief, relatives, in-laws, friends and the wider communities of Greater Wau North and Jur River County.
The statement was signed by William Deng Dut Yamo Dut Ayom Wol, Secretary for Finance of the association and a final year student at the University of Juba’s School of Journalism, Media and Communication Studies.
The message described Chief Pasquale as a respected father figure and a committed community servant who helped maintain social harmony and traditional leadership during both peace and conflict periods.
“During this critical moment, we convey our heartfelt condolences… and put God first in every trying moment.” They also encouraged the bereaved family and the community to accept their prayers as a sign of unity and support during the mourning period.
The late Chief Pasquale Bak Acho was also related to Hon. Andrea Mayar Acho, the former Governor of the now defunct Wau State, through his stepmother.
