(TWIC EAST) – Prolonged flooding has left most payams in Twic East County isolated and struggling, severely damaging livelihoods and limiting access to emergency assistance, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
In a statement issued on 29 July, FAO said that despite extreme challenges, its staff in the area have resorted to using locally available canoes to deliver critical support to affected communities across Jonglei State’s flood prone zones.
Heavy seasonal rains have caused widespread flooding in many parts of Twic East, making roads impassable and cutting off entire villages from markets, health services and humanitarian aid. This has worsened an already fragile food security situation in the region, where many households rely on subsistence farming and fishing.
The use of canoes has become the only practical method to access remote areas submerged by water. FAO teams are currently delivering emergency items such as seeds, farming tools, and fishing kits to help families recover and sustain themselves.
According to FAO, the continued flooding has disrupted planting cycles and destroyed crops in much of the county. Families that previously depended on seasonal harvests are now reliant on emergency support to meet basic needs. The organisation warned that unless floodwaters recede and more assistance is mobilised, the humanitarian situation could further deteriorate.
