(ABYEI) – A group of women in the Abyei Administrative Area have received training in milk handling and processing as part of an empowerment initiative led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Fisheries in Abyei.
Supported by the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), the programme aimed to equip women with practical dairy skills, boost income generation and improve household livelihoods through local milk production.
According to FAO South Sudan, the training included guidance on hygienic milk collection, preservation and small scale processing techniques. As part of the support, milk handling equipment was also distributed to the trained women, allowing them to begin income generating activities within their communities.
The project has been welcomed by local authorities and community members, who view it as a key step toward promoting women’s participation in the local economy and supporting food security through value-added agriculture.
While no financial figures were disclosed similar dairy empowerment projects typically require modest investment not usually affordable
