(TWIC COUNTY) – Twic Hands Over Indigenous Cattle to Settle Theft Case
Authorities in Twic County have recovered and handed over 60 head of cattle to the Messiria pastoralist community, in a major gesture aimed at strengthening peace and reconciliation between neighbouring communities in South Sudan and Sudan.
The initiative was led by Twic County Commissioner Hon. John Mabior Marup in close coordination with the Division 11 Commander, Major General Juma Rehan.
The livestock, made up of indigenous South Sudanese breeds, were recovered after an investigation revealed that cattle originally stolen from the Messiria community two months ago had been moved and sold in another state by criminal elements.
Given the challenges in tracing and identifying the exact animals taken, Messiria leaders agreed to receive equivalent local breeds as a symbolic and fair replacement to settle the dispute and prevent further escalation.
This latest handover builds on the ongoing efforts that saw 60 cattle officially transferred to the Masseria Arabs of Awalad Kamil on 31 July 2025 as part of broader peace and reconciliation measures.
That event was led by Commissioner Marup alongside Brigadier General Maruon Ngor Makuac, and Hon. Majang Ayuel Nyuol, Chairman of the Twic-Masseria Peace Committee, with participation from Hon. Mawien Piok Deng, SPLM Secretary General of Twic County, and Hon. John Garang Mabior Ater, the Warrap State Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Messiria community leader Sadiq commended the Twic leadership for their efforts and reiterated the importance of cultural dialogue in addressing such sensitive issues.
