Yei Youth Leaders Warn Against Misuse of Social Media

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Youth leaders in Yei River County have urged young people to use social media responsibly and avoid spreading hate speech, misinformation, and content that could undermine community cohesion.

The Chairman of the Yei River County Youth Association, Gaga Frank Osman, encouraged youth to harness digital platforms for positive purposes such as entrepreneurship, skills development, and job creation. He stressed that social media should be used to foster creativity and self-reliance rather than promote idleness or divisive narratives.

“Use social media to create jobs for yourselves and avoid laziness,” Osman urged, calling on young people to embrace innovation and productive online engagement.

Meanwhile, another youth leader, Awule Benard, appealed to the public to reject misinformation and rely on accredited media outlets for accurate and verified information. He warned that the spread of unverified content on social media has the potential to mislead communities and erode public trust in credible news sources.

Benard also referenced reports of internet disruptions affecting some users, including MTN subscribers, on Sunday, 13 September 2026. However, the cause and extent of the reported disruption could not be independently verified.

He further encouraged South Sudanese youth to verify information before sharing it online, especially on matters relating to peace, security and public welfare.

The calls come amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media and the spread of misinformation in South Sudan, with youth leaders emphasising the importance of responsible digital engagement to promote informed public discourse and social harmony.
