(JUBA CITY) – A traffic police officer in Juba has received recognition from motorists and pedestrians after he continued directing vehicles at Buluk Junction during heavy rainfall.
Corporal Juma Jubara was seen soaked by the downpour while keeping traffic moving at one of the capital’s busiest intersections. Despite the difficult conditions, he remained on duty until the rain eased, helping to prevent accidents and congestion.
Speaking shortly after the incident, the traffic officer said that rainy weather often leads to road accidents in Juba because many drivers rush in search of shelter. He explained that such behaviour increases congestion and raises the risk of collisions:
“Rain increases the risk of accidents because many drivers speed up to escape it, which worsens traffic jams. That is why I decided to stay on duty until the rain was over.”
His commitment has been praised by road users as an example of responsibility in ensuring road safety, at a season when poor road conditions and flooding add to the challenges of driving in South Sudan’s capital.
It is also clear the report has also drawn attention to the wider challenges faced by traffic officers who often work with limited resources and under difficult conditions to maintain order on the roads.
It is obvious from the photographs circulating that the officer was not wearing “weather protection”.
