(LASU PAYAM / YEI RIVER COUNTY)-The former head chief of Lasu Payam, elder Paul Kuba Lukadi, was laid to rest on Thursday at his ancestral home in Nyori Boma, following his death earlier this week.
Family members confirmed that the late Kuba passed away on Monday at the age of 102 at his residence in Nyori after a prolonged illness. Speaking during the funeral, his granddaughter, Boya Suzan, said he succumbed to a stroke and related health complications.
Mourners and community members paid tribute to the late elder, describing him as one of Yei River County’s most respected figures. He was widely recognized for his dedication to serving people without discrimination and for fostering unity among diverse communities.
The Paramount Chief of Yei River County, Joseph Brown, extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged them to find comfort in faith during the difficult time.
He also used the occasion to advise young people to steer clear of criminal activities and embrace values that promote long and meaningful lives, highlighting the late Kuba’s contributions to peacebuilding and community development.
Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo, who attended the burial ceremony held in Nyori Clan, Lasu Payam, described the deceased as a source of wisdom whose life positively impacted generations across South Sudan. He encouraged residents, especially the youth, to learn from the elder’s commitment to service, unity and peaceful coexistence.
Malimbo further called on young people in Lasu Payam to reject violence and work collectively to promote peace, development, and improved social services in the area.
The funeral was attended by county officials, state government representatives, traditional leaders, security personnel, religious leaders and members of the wider Lasu community.
Following the ceremony, Lukadi was laid to rest near his residence in accordance with local traditions.
The passing of Paul Kuba Lukadi marks the loss of one of Yei River County’s oldest and most revered elders, whose legacy of community service and dedication to peace will be remembered for years to come.
