(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Chairlady of the Women’s Association in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, has appealed to local authorities across Greater Yei to take urgent action to stop the killing of women by their own husbands.
Mama Alice Siama said women in the area are deeply concerned about the recent cases of women being murdered in their homes. She noted that several incidents occurred toward the end of last year and at the beginning of this year in different counties.
“We as women are not happy with what is happening to women in our communities. One woman was killed in Giru in Yei Town together with her babysitter on 26 December last year. She was killed in a very wrong and painful way. As women, we are not happy about that,” she said.
She also cited another incident where a woman was reportedly chopped with an axe in Mukaya Payam of Lainya County earlier this year.
“Why are such things happening? This is a woman who cares for the family and delivers children for you,” she added.
Mama Siama urged community members and neighbors to play an active role in preventing violence and protecting innocent lives.
“We are calling on neighbors and community members—if something like this is happening, why can’t we come together and stop it? We are sorry because no one is stepping in to prevent such acts,” she said.
She further called on the police and local authorities to take their responsibilities seriously in protecting women and addressing domestic violence cases.
“Police must do their work well. When problems arise, they should respond quickly and ensure that women and other vulnerable people are protected,” she emphasized.
The Chairlady made the appeal on Thursday during the commemoration of International Women’s Day at the county level in Yei River County. The event was celebrated under the theme “Promote Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls in Central Equatoria State.”
