Yei MP Bidal Says Ready to Become Former MP as Transition Nears End

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A Member of Parliament representing Yei River County in the National Transitional Legislative Assembly, Moses Bidal, says he will not be offended if people begin referring to him as a former Member of Parliament as South Sudan’s transitional period nears its expected conclusion.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday morning, Bidal wrote: “From today, I will not feel offended when I am referred to as former Hon. Member of Parliament.”

His remarks come as the transitional government established under the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement is expected to reach the end of its mandate on September 22, 2026.

The statement follows a major development in the country’s electoral process after President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday assented to the National Elections Act, 2012 (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The amended law is intended to harmonize electoral legislation with the Transitional Constitution and strengthen the legal framework guiding the country’s planned general elections in December 2026.

The signing of the amendment is widely seen as a significant milestone in South Sudan’s preparations for the polls, raising expectations for the country’s first general elections since independence.

Bidal’s comments reflect the growing anticipation surrounding the transition from the current unity government to an elected administration as the country moves closer to the scheduled elections.
