(JUBA AND YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, has directed the Commissioner of Yei River County to develop a strategy for the peaceful removal of Ambororo cattle herders who are reported to be moving with arms in several parts of the county.
State authorities say many of the herders are currently concentrated in Tore Payam. Religious leaders and residents there have raised concerns that the presence of armed pastoralists has caused insecurity and fear among communities over recent months.
On Wednesday, Yei River County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme met Governor Adil in Juba to brief him on the security situation affecting the county.
In his report, the Commissioner said the general situation in Yei River County remains calm, although there are isolated cases of insecurity linked to criminal elements.
The meeting also discussed measures to strengthen security, address criminal activities, and support ongoing development projects, including the rehabilitation of the Wuluturu Bridge.
In response, Governor Adil instructed the Commissioner to coordinate closely with security organs to ensure the immediate and peaceful withdrawal of the Ambororo cattle herders from Yei River County. The Governor pledged continued support to prioritise security and infrastructure development in the area.
Yei River County, located about one hundred miles south west of Juba, was among the areas heavily affected by conflict that erupted in 2016 and continues to face recovery and security challenges.
