South Sudan Expands Capacity for Product Safety/PHOTO CREDITS: SSNBS
(JUBA) – Rehabilitation work on the national standards laboratory in Juba is progressing, with officials saying the upgrade will improve testing capacity and help ensure the safety of goods entering South Sudan.
Engineers from the World Food Programme met with the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) at its headquarters to review ongoing work under a joint programme to refurbish the facility.
The project follows an agreement signed last year between the two sides.
SSNBS said the upgraded laboratory is expected to strengthen the country’s ability to test imported food, medicines and other products, supporting efforts to protect consumers and improve quality control.
Officials from the standards regulator added that improving laboratory capacity will also help the bureau work towards meeting international accreditation standards, which are required for recognised testing and certification services.
Both teams from WFP and SSNBBS said progress so far is satisfactory and reaffirmed their commitment to completing the work and bringing the facility into full operation.
The meeting was attended by the Executive Director of the bureau, Oiylang Dominic Kanuto, and technical staff from the World Food Programme, who are supporting the rehabilitation.
A press release from SSBNS stated the project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen standards and regulatory systems in South Sudan, as the country seeks to improve trade and consumer protection.
