The United States has cancelled all valid visas for South Sudanese citizens and restricted the issuance of future visas due to the South Sudanese government’s failure to take timely action regarding the return of its repatriated nationals.
The United States has taken a significant diplomatic step by cancelling all valid visas for South Sudanese citizens and imposing restrictions on future visa issuance. This decision, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), follows the failure of the South Sudanese government to act promptly on the repatriation of its citizens.
Rubio stated that the United States had no choice but to revoke the visas due to the South Sudanese government’s inaction in addressing the timely return of its citizens who had been repatriated. The US decision aims to prevent South Sudanese individuals from entering the United States until the government resolves the issue of returning its nationals who had been previously deported or left the country.
In his statement, Rubio said, “I am taking measures to cancel all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and to restrict their further issuance to prevent entry into the United States of America, effective immediately, due to the Transitional Government of South Sudan’s failure to make a timely decision to return its repatriated citizens.”
This move comes after a previous announcement by Rubio regarding the revocation of visas for over 300 foreign students who were involved in pro-Palestinian protests. These students were reportedly stripped of their visas for their participation in demonstrations related to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, adding to the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the US and various governments.
The cancellation of visas for South Sudanese citizens marks a new chapter in the diplomatic relationship between the US and South Sudan. With the country already grappling with political and humanitarian challenges, the US decision could add further strain to the situation. It remains unclear how the South Sudanese government will respond to the US’ actions or whether they will take steps to resolve the situation with their repatriated citizens.
As it stands, South Sudan faces mounting international pressure to address its internal governance issues, which have had far-reaching consequences for its diplomatic relations.
