(JUBA) –South Sudan is among 53 African countries that have been granted 100 percent zero-tariff treatment for goods entering the Chinese market, starting May this year.
This development was confirmed on Thursday by the Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, Ma Qiang, during the launch of the South Sudan Trade Information Hub in Juba.
The newly established hub is designed to support businesses with access to market intelligence, facilitate trade connections, and improve the country’s export competitiveness.
Qiang said the policy will allow South Sudanese products to enter the Chinese market duty-free and encourage trade flows between the two countries.
The ambassador described the initiative as part of China’s broader effort to expand economic cooperation with Africa, noting that the zero-tariff treatment applies to countries with diplomatic relations with China, including South Sudan.
The policy is expected to make it easier for local producers to compete in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
“China encourages its enterprises to import high-quality South Sudanese products such as honey, sesame, and turmeric,” he said, mentioning key sectors with export potential.
China has already positioned itself as one of South Sudan’s major trade partners and investors, with involvement in infrastructure, energy, and labor-intensive projects.
Ambassador Qiang said the move aligns with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which emphasizes high-quality development and greater openness to global markets.
He added that it also reflects commitments made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to expand trade access for African countries.
The Trade Information Hub, launched alongside the announcement, is expected to play a key role by providing market data, connecting exporters with international buyers, and promoting South Sudanese goods abroad.
It also serves as a platform to help local enterprises better understand international trade requirements and tap into global markets.
The Chinese ambassador urged South Sudanese enterprises to seize the opportunity by aligning their products with Chinese market demands, increasing exports, and generating profits that can support national development.
“China stands ready to work with South Sudan to seize opportunities in multilateral and regional investment and trade cooperation,” he added.
He also reaffirmed China’s support for South Sudan’s participation in major regional and global economic frameworks, including the African Union, the East African Community, and the World Trade Organization, as well as initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
