(YEI RIVER COUNTY, CENTRAL EQUATORIA STATE) – The Central Equatoria State Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development, in partnership with a local company Siric Investment Ltd, has officially announced the establishment of a greenhouse shed for nurturing cocoa and coffee seedlings in Yei River County.
The initiative marks the beginning of an ambitious five-year operational plan aimed at producing and distributing five million seedlings across the state. According to the Ministry, the project will include the cultivation of three million cocoa seedlings alongside two million coffee and other cash crop seedlings to support cooperative societies, farmers’ groups and individual farmers.
In a press statement extended to Access Radio on Saturday, the Ministry called on cooperative societies, farmers’ groups and individual farmers to register with their respective County Agriculture Departments and Departments of Cooperatives and Rural Development. The Ministry noted that the data collected will be consolidated at the state level and uploaded into the Electronic Cooperatives Registry to enable proper classification, coordination, and delivery of support services.
The Ministry further appealed to the National Government, development partners, donors and corporate institutions to invest in agriculture and cooperative development. It emphasised that strengthening this sector is key to driving economic recovery, improving rural livelihoods, and reducing poverty in South Sudan.
Officials highlighted that the greenhouse initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda on integrated rural development and economic transformation. It also supports State Strategic Policy Pillar Three, which focuses on poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
The project is expected to enhance agricultural productivity in Central Equatoria State and boost income opportunities for local farmers while strengthening the cooperative movement.
